CHAPTER IV Documentation

METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the method used by the researchers in conducting the study, its results and discussion. Interview is one of the tools employed in the investigation of this research.

An interview is a conversation between two people (the interviewer and the interviewee) where questions are asked by the interviewer to obtain information from the interviewee. Observation is either an activity of a living being, such as a human, consisting of receiving knowledge of the outside world through the senses, or the recording of data using scientific instruments. The term may also refer to any data collected during this activity. An observation can also be the way you look at things or when you look at something.

Conducting interview with the teachers of grade school is one of the instruments used to determine the outcome of traditional learning tool on the grade school students towards study workloads and survival rates of their grades.

There are grades 1 to 6 in elementary students in the Elementary School. The researchers choose the grade school elementary students who are officially enrolled for the Academic Year 2011-2012.

The method is appropriate because the study involved several gatherings of facts regarding the Enhanced Educational Computer Game Program, its influence on the attitude of Elementary students toward study workloads and survival rate.

The thought of interviews and observations is composed of one part that presented the extent of influence the Educational Computer Game has on the attitude of grade school elementary students towards their learning. Through the observation, the researchers oversee the earliest method of acquiring knowledge of their limitations about their study.

The researchers utilized the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) method in the development of the system. The SDLC method was the process employed in the analysis and design of the Offline Game Based Learning App. The model develops systematically from one phase to other in a downward fashion, like a waterfall.

The following are the phases involved in the development of the Offline Game Based Learning App for Science Subject as shown in Figure 1.0:

Requirements Analysis-This includes the methodology used to develop the system, the system’s functionality, the suggested system content by the science teachers and the project plan in developing the said system. It also includes the software and hardware requirements, software developer and people ware recommendations.

System and Software Design Phase-Based on the result of the observation and interview as well as users suggestions the researchers created a design for the system to be developed. All the requirements of the first phase are being used to contribute in the successful preparation of creating the Offline Game Based Learning App for Science Subject design. It also includes the Data Flow Diagram, DFD Explosion for teachers and students, and Entity Relationship Diagram of the developed system.

Implementation Phase-This phase discussed the implementation plan and results of Offline Game Based Learning App for Science Subject. This phase also discussed if the recommended functions and suggestions of the respondents and users are met.

On receiving system design documents, the work is divided in modules/units and actual coding is started. The system is first developed in small programs called units, which are integrated in the next phase. Each unit is developed and tested for its functionality; this is referred to as Unit Testing. Unit testing mainly verifies if the modules/units meet their specifications.

Testing Phase-Testing will exercise the system in all possible ways. It includes initial testing and final testing of the developed system (Offline Game Based Learning App for Science Subject).

Operation and Maintenance Phase-System operation includes user support to the end user or users. The teacher (game admin) and the students are the users of the proposed system. The system must provide product or service to the end users. Users should receive training especially the teacher (game admin). He or she could use the user’s manual or direct assistance from experts to support critical activities. Then the teacher would be the one to supervise the students in playing the game.

The maintenance phase consists of maintenance-tasks to keep the product up and running. The maintenance includes any general enhancements, changes and additions, which might be required by the end-users. These defects and deficiencies are usually documented by the developing organization to enable future solutions and known issues addressing in any future maintenance releases. Maintenance is always necessary to keep system usable and useful.

REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS AND DOCUMENTATION

This section presents the methodology used to develop the system, the system’s functionality, the suggested system content by the science teachers and the project plan in developing the said system. It also includes the software and hardware requirements, software developer and people ware recommendations.

The requirements were gathered by the researchers from the end-user by conducting interview, observation, and consultation. The suggestions of the science teachers on the system contents were analyzed for their validity and the possibility of incorporating the requirements in the system to be developed is also studied. It includes the methodology used to develop the system, the system’s functionality, and the project plan in developing the said system. It also includes the software and hardware requirements, software developer and people ware recommendations.

Data Gathering. To gather some of the data and information in order to rate the level of learning of the students, the researchers do the following methods:

Interview – During the interview between the researchers and the respondents, the science subject teacher as our respondents revealed some system content and outcome of the system, and shared us her problem specially in getting her student’s attention in order for them to achieve higher academic performance in the subject.

The teacher’s perception to the problems they encountered is having interactions or dealing with their students specifically on motivating pupil’s attention and awakening their interest in learning is noted.

Observation  –  In some cases, the teacher uses some forms of multimedia yet it is not enough to sustain in awakening attention of students during discussions. The students need to experience another method of learning that could stimulate and maintain their interests in the said subject.

System Methodology. The researchers present the process framework in developing the Offline Game Based Learning App for Science Subject. The researchers used this approach in conducting the study in order to collect and congregate exact information needed in the system development. The model develops systematically from one phase to other in a downward fashion, like a waterfall.

The Offline Game Based Learning App for Science Subject was developed to enhance the interest of Grade school students in their science subject and to give science subject teacher/s another method of teaching. The researchers used Waterfall Model in developing the ELearning games. In this methodology, the software evolved as a result of shared information between the respondents and the researchers. The science teacher requires that the content of the system would be based on their teaching outline and the rest of the system requirements were establish by the researchers.

The researchers present the software development tools, hardware specifications, and people ware recommendations for the developed system.

SYSTEM SOFTWARE DESIGN WITH PROCESSES

Requirements of this phase include system functionalities to define what functions are to be included in the developed system to satisfy the needs of the teachers and students in teaching and learning Science subject; and constraints that the end-user (who will be using the system) expects from the system.

System Functionality

Game Administration – The Game developed has an admin user and password. It has a databank (quiz, facts, uploaded videos, records) that can be manipulated and maintained by the admin. The administrator also can modify the quiz setting system.

Game Player – Interaction between the games and the students is one of the features of the system. The student could access the game then view records.

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN AND RESULTS

The researchers conducted a system dry-run and conduct training of the target users of the system. The users of the system checked and evaluated the system if the recommended functions and suggestions of the users were met.

After the initial testing and final testing the researchers plan to integrate the Offline Game Based Learning App for Science Subject to its respondents   to check if the recommended functions and suggestions of the users are met.

In order to implement the system the administration of Elementary School must have the above list of required support materials. Users should receive training especially the teacher (game admin). He /she could use

The user’s manual or direct assistance from experts to support critical activities. The teacher must supervise the students in playing the game and giving instructions.

To keep the product up and running there is a need of system’s maintenance. It is always necessary to keep system usable and useful. The respondents could contact the system developer for any general enhancements, changes and additions, which might be required by them.

TESTING

These include initial testing and final testing of the FLG-Science6 system:

Initial Testing includes the pre-installation of the Offline Game Based Learning App for Science Subject System. For the evaluation of the developed system, the researchers made a letter and personally release the evaluation form with the IT experts using the McCall’s Software Quality Model Evaluation Form. The tabulation of the Software Evaluation Results follows after the system was evaluated.

Final Testing was conducted after the initial testing was done. In this phase, the researchers made a letter to the intended users, by using the standard User Acceptance Evaluation Form by Scats et. al to evaluate the  Offline Game Based Learning App for Science Subject where in the intended users was the one who tested  and rate of the developed system if the desired functions were met.
