Introduction of the Study

The capstone project “Arduino Based Alcohol Detector” is designed to detect alcohol level. The alcohol detector is made using Arduino with a sensor that detects alcohol presence through breath analyser.

The law enforcement requires checking the level of alcohol of those who are driving vehicles. The police must search for and apprehend people who drive after consuming alcohol, as this can result to serious accidents. People who drive after drinking endanger not just their own lives but also the lives of others. As a result, police must be vigilant and check someone they suspect of driving under the influence of alcohol. Police may not effectively carry out their duty in checking if they do not have an efficient and reliable device who will provide immediate and accurate result in detecting alcohol presence.

Proposed Solution (Arduino Based Alcohol Detector)

To address the concerns mentioned above, the researchers of the study aim to design and develop an Arduino- based alcohol detector. The device will be built using Arduino that uses sensor to detect alcohol level of drivers by the smell of their breath. The device will display the alcohol level of the driver in the monitor with an indication of either normal or dangerous alcohol consumption. Through the device, the police will quickly determine those who are driving under the influence of alcohol and prevent accidents. The device will be efficient and reliable to use by the law enforcement.

Objectives of the Study

General Objective – the main objective of the project is to develop an Arduino-based alcohol detector to detect alcohol level of drivers.

The following are the specific objectives of the study:

  1. To design an Arduino-based alcohol detector using breath analyzer.
  2. The device will help law enforcement officers to quickly detect and apprehend drivers under influence of alcohol.
  3. To develop an alcohol detector that is efficient and reliable to use.
  4. The device will help in preventing accidents brought by drunk driving.
  5. To design a device that will immediately present the result of the alcohol level.
  6. To develop a system that is easy to operate and should be completed within a short period of time and must fit with the budget of the end-user.
  7. To evaluate the developed system using ISO/IEC 9126 with the following quality characteristics
    1. Functionality
    2. Reliability
    3. Usability
    4. Efficiency
    5. Maintainability
    6. Portability

Significance of the Study

The success of the study is deemed beneficial to the following:

Law Enforcement Officers/Police. The device will greatly benefit them for it will help them effectively carry out their task and lessen possibility of accidents.

Drivers. The device will help them not getting into accidents due to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Passengers. The device will keep them safe from getting in to accidents because of drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol.

Researchers. The researchers of the study gain more experience in developing devices using Arduino.

Future Researchers. The study can serve as their reference in making their own version of the alcohol detector.

School Beneficiaries

The proposed capstone project may also be implemented in the school where the following group of people can benefit from this project.

Security Personnel. It will help them to identify quickly the strong scents of alcoholic drinks.

Students. The system will be beneficial to the students to be aware that school prohibits the drinking of liquor or alcoholic drinks when they are in the school premises and to remind them to study instead of drinking.
