Fish Pond Water Quality Monitoring System

Fish Pond Water Quality Monitoring System

Abstract

A fish pond is a managed pond, manmade lake, or water tank filled with fish and used in aquaculture for fish production, recreational fishing, or decorative purposes. In developing countries like the Philippines, fish ponds are also being promoted. They help in providing food and resources to the owner and buyer.

Natural factors and human influences all impact water quality situations throughout a pond. Several water quality attributes are driven by environmental factors including the source of the pond water and the kinds of rock and soil in the pond drainage basin. The above factors are difficult to manage, but they usually cause few issues. Therefore, the majority of serious water quality issues are caused by land uses or other activities near or in the pond. The consequences of these activities are frequently mitigated by proper management and early detection of problems through implementing a water quality monitoring system which helps to keep balanced levels of water quality index, which is critical for fish growth and health. It is recommended that water quality parameters be monitored and assessed regularly.

Introduction of the Study

The capstone project, “Fish Pond Water Quality Monitoring System,” is intended to help with the process of managing pond water quality. The systems continuously monitor and track water quality, providing comprehensive data which can be used to analyze data and enhance performance. Sensors can receive and store records at any time.

In traditional water quality monitoring systems, test samples are conducted in situ. Water testing and measurements are done in a manner that limits the data to the specific time that it was taken.

More sophisticated methods employ computers and sensors which can log data in memory and can be retrieved by technicians later for analysis.

Presently, there are two kinds of control mechanisms in water monitoring systems. Foremost, there’s a general-purpose system consisting of computers, data loggers, and remote components. The other one is an industrial control system that uses small-scale programmed computers with controllers. Both systems can monitor different water parameters. These systems are currently being used in water treatment facilities.

The system under study employs a personal computer, microcontroller, sensors, and the existing GSM network.

The system was developed for fish pond owners to easily monitor the water quality of their ponds. Because the system measures the oxygen levels in the pond, fish kills can be avoided. Levels of dissolved oxygen below 6 mg/L could harm pond life. The most major reason for fish kills in ponds is the absence of dissolved oxygen.

Proposed Solution

In response to the problems identified, the researchers proposed that a fish pond water quality monitoring system be implemented. The system will help owners in monitoring water quality. This project will be equipped with advanced technology sensors that can receive and store records at any time. The system will provide a real-time update of the pond water quality.

Objectives of the Study

General Objective – The researchers’ overall goal is to design and implement a fish pond water quality monitoring system.

Specifically, the researchers aim the following objectives:

  1. To introduce and implement a fish pond water quality monitoring system.
  2. To effectively reduce the risk of fish kills.
  3. To design a system that is capable of detecting water quality.
  4. To reduce or minimize substantial losses because of fish kills.
  5. Complete the development of the system according to the timeframe or project schedule.
  6. To produce documentation that records the phases, tasks, and deliverables of the study.
  7. To mitigate early detection of the absence of dissolved oxygen that will harm the fish.
  8. To assess the system’s acceptability, efficacy, quality, timeliness, and productivity from the perspective of every household.

Scope of the Study

This research includes the planning and implementation of the Fish Pond Water Quality Monitoring System. The system keeps track of the water’s quality. The system is specifically designed to assist fish pond owners who have lost a significant amount of money due to fish kills.

Significance of the Study

The following persons or groups will benefit from the project’s success:

Fish pond Owner. The system will help fish pond owners in improving the quality and quantity of their fish. Additionally, the system enables the user to quickly identify the affected area on the pond, as well as measurements of all parameters, were measured, and see which parameter reached the range to a toxic level within such a specified time, allowing the owner to act immediately.

Researchers. The experience with the development and implementation of the project will further improve the researcher’s knowledge and skills.

Future Researchers. If they choose to create and implement their own fish pond water quality monitoring system, they can use the study as a guide.

Conclusion

The study was carried out by the researchers to design, develop, and implement a Fish Pond Water Quality Monitoring System. The developed system was provided to the study’s target users and respondents. The developed system has the ability in monitoring the quality of water, which is critical for understanding measurement reactions and their impacts on fish feeding, growth, and health. Every water attribute may not reveal much on its own, but when many factors are combined, they can expose versatile processes that take place in the pond. Water quality records will enable fish pond owners to track changes and make snap decisions, allowing appropriate actions to be implemented as soon as possible.

Recommendations

The study’s significant findings prompted the researchers to strongly advocate for the system’s implementation. The system’s implementation will eliminate the difficulties associated with monitoring water quality. The system is highly recommended due to its efficiency and dependability, which can be provided to all fish pond owners.

The researchers’ main recommendations are as follows:

  1. Fish pond owners should think about installing a system that allows them to easily monitor the water quality.
  2. The researchers recommend that users become knowledgeable about how to use the system to effectively avoid the risk of fish kills.
  3. The system is recommended because of the efficiency and consistency it could provide to the intended end-users.
