Smart Healthcare Support for Remote Patient Monitoring During COVID-19 Quarantine

Smart Healthcare Support for Remote Patient Monitoring During COVID-19 Quarantine

Abstract

The Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has overwhelmed the healthcare system. Since the disease is contagious, those who are infected are required to be isolated and undergo quarantine. The rapid increase of COVID-19 positive cases seriously challenged the healthcare sector. The higher the number of positive cases, the more workforce is needed to provide healthcare and monitor patients under quarantine.

Patients infected with COVID-19 can suffer symptoms ranging from moderate to severe cases and some are asymptomatic. Severe cases are monitored and treated within a clinical environment while those moderate and asymptomatic cases are isolated in quarantine facilities. However, there is a need to continuously monitor non-severe COVID-19 patients due to possible drastic and abrupt changes in their health status.

With this, the development of a Smart Healthcare Support System for Remote Patient Monitoring During COVID-19 Quarantine is proposed. The Smart Healthcare Support is designed to remotely monitor COVID-19 patients undergoing quarantine. COVID patients at quarantine sites or homes can communicate to doctors and healthcare givers for monitoring. The Smart Health Care Support System will allow doctors to monitor COVID patients remotely through text, audio, and video to gather real-time data about the patient’s health status.

By having this innovative system, healthcare centers will not be overwhelmed with high numbers of COVID patients treated within a clinical environment. The system is designed with sensors to get a real-time update of the COVID patient’s health condition. The implementation of the system will ensure that patients in quarantine sites or at home isolation can still receive quality health care and medical supplies without overwhelming the healthcare centers.

Introduction

The capstone project, “Smart Healthcare Support for Remote Patient Monitoring During COVID-19 Quarantine” is designed to aid the process of monitoring COVID-19 patients remotely during the quarantine period. Smart Healthcare Support is built with sensors that can support vital signs reading for doctors to monitor the patient’s health status remotely. The system also offers text, audio, and video interfaces that allow patients and doctors to communicate remotely.

The surge of COVID-19 positive cases has challenged the healthcare sector in providing the needs and proper health care to all patients. Patients infected with COVID-19 can suffer symptoms ranging from moderate to severe cases and some are asymptomatic. Since the coronavirus is contagious, infected individuals are isolated, severe cases are monitored and treated within a clinical environment while those non-severe cases are isolated in quarantine sites or at home. Those non-severe cases in quarantine sites or at home still need continuous monitoring for their health status to detect possible changes that will put their lives in jeopardy. Thus, there is an obvious need to develop an innovative system that will aid remote monitoring of COVID patients.

Proposed Solution

The advancement of technology has paved the way for improvement in the medical field and healthcare sector. In conjunction with the above-mentioned concerns, the researchers propose the development of the Smart Healthcare Support system to streamline the process of monitoring COVID-19 patients remotely during quarantine. The system has sensors that can support vital signs reading for doctors to monitor the patient’s health status remotely. The system also offers text, audio, and video interfaces that allow patients and doctors to communicate remotely. The system will provide a real-time update of the COVID patient’s health condition to health caregivers for monitoring. The system will guarantee that patients in quarantine sites or at home isolation can still receive quality health care and medical supplies without overwhelming the healthcare centers.

Objectives of the Study

General Objective – The main goal of the project is to design, develop and implement a Smart Healthcare Support System for remote patient monitoring during COVID-19 quarantine.

Specifically, the project’s objectives are the following:

  1. To design a system that supports remote monitoring of COVID-19 patients during quarantine.
  2. To build a smart healthcare support system with sensors to read and obtain the vital signs of patients.
  3. To design a system with audio, text, and video-based interface for remote communication between patients and doctors.
  4. To allow non-contact-based hospital visits for COVID-19 patient monitoring.
  5. To reduce COVID-19 patients are monitored and treated within hospitals.
  6. To evaluate the system in terms of user acceptability, effectiveness, reliability, productivity, and quality.

Scope of the Study

This study covers the proposal and development of the Smart Healthcare Support System. The smart healthcare system is limited in reading the vital signs and allowing patient-doctor remote communication. The system is purposely designed to aid the need for remote monitoring during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Significance of the Study

The success of the project is significant for the following individuals or groups:

Hospitals/Healthcare Facilities. The success of the project will highly benefit them. Hospitals will not be overwhelmed with the surge of COVID-19 patients. Also, they can provide quality healthcare and medical supplies needed by isolated and quarantined patients remotely.

Doctors. The smart healthcare support system will allow them to remotely monitor COVID-19 patients. The system will aid the process of getting the vital signs of the patients through the sensors. The doctors and patients can also communicate for updates about the patient’s health status.

COVID-19 Patients. The success of the system will guarantee that they can receive efficient health status monitoring even if they only suffer non-severe symptoms. Proper health care and medical attention will be given to them remotely.

Researchers. The success of the project will contribute to their lessons and experiences in developing successful programs as well as harness their maximum potential as researchers.

Future Researchers. The study can serve as their reference in developing their version of the project.

Conclusion

This study aimed to develop and implement a Smart Healthcare Support system for remote patient monitoring during COVID-19 quarantine. The system was presented to its end-users for assessment. The result showed that the respondents and target end-users respond satisfactorily about the system in terms of user acceptability, effectiveness, reliability, productivity, and quality. The development met the needs and requirements of the respondents and the intended users. The majority of the respondents have seen the potential of the system. Thus, the researchers concluded that the Smart Healthcare support system is effective in aiding the process of monitoring patients during COVID-19 quarantine.

Recommendations

The significant result of the study prompted the researchers to strongly recommend the implementation of the system. The implementation of the system will eliminate various difficulties in providing quality health care and medical attention to COVID-19 patients during quarantine. The system is highly recommended for its efficiency and reliability that can be rendered to the end-users. The researchers also highlight that the target end-users should familiarize the system to correctly utilize it.

The researchers specifically recommend the following:

  1. Hospitals should consider the implementation of the system for them to easily and efficiently provide remote monitoring and health care to COVID-19 patients under quarantine.
  2. The researchers suggest that COVID-19 patients should familiarize how to use the system to efficiently communicate with health professionals regarding their health status during quarantine.
  3. The implementation of the system is highly recommended to ensure that patients in quarantine sites or at home isolation can still receive quality health care and medical supplies without overwhelming the healthcare centers.
